Tree and Shrub Identification

March 16 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Event Description:

Leaves are one of the biggest clues for tree and shrub identification. So what do you do when there are no leaves? It’s a special time of year to appreciate trees and shrubs in a totally different way. This program will point out unique bud and bark characteristics of many of our native trees and shrubs, making identification possible when there are no leaves to see!

A hands-on session looking at around 50 twigs and branches from native trees and shrubs will be followed by an outdoor hike around the Town of Union Conservancy to apply what we learn. Some easy tips and a simple tree, bud, and bark key will be provided for participants to take home. This program is outside, beginning at the Conservancy shelter, so dress for the weather and get set to have some fun learning to identify our native trees and shrubs! Hope to see you there!

Guided by: Jim Schwiebert, Naturalist

Bio: I have been a Naturalist at Beaver Creek Reserve since 2007. Prior to that, I spent two years as a Fisheries Technician, 10 years as a Forester for Chippewa County, and 7 years as a Wildlife Technician in Eau Claire. As a naturalist, leaf-off tree and shrub ID is one of my favorite things to teach!
